In 1980 I worked as a photographer at a high-end portrait studio. We photographed everyone from Ronald Reagan to 4 star Generals to Miss America. We had four full time photographers, several assistants, five account managers, two framers, an office manager and two full time retouchers. One retouched negatives and the other airbrushed finished portraits. Back then I thought that people should just be happy with the way that they look and not expect every portrait to be perfect. I have changed my opinion over the years. A professionally retouched photo can make the subject look more like the way that we see them in real life.I have learned how to use Photo Shop for retouching portraits and I use it often. However, I thought that a program that was designed specifically for portraits could cut down on the time that it took to retouch a portrait. First you upload a photo from your computer. The program wants to know whether the subject is a male, female or a child. Once you have entered that information it program zooms in on the subjects right eye. You then define the corners, iris, pupil, and the shape of the eye and eyebrow. Once you finish it takes you to the left eye of the subject and you repeat those steps. You then are asked to define the tip of the nose. Next we define the mouth: whether it is opened or closed; the corners of the mouth; finally we select the shape of the lips. After that is completed you are asked to shape of the subject's face. All of these actions are easy to complete as the outline for each feature is already on the screen and you just drag them to the right place.
Once we have finished defining the facial features Portrait Professional does it's magic. We can view the finished image side by side with the original or on it's own. Now is when I take control and really decide how much correction I want. I can:
* Change the shape of the subject's eyes, mouth face, etc.
* Brighten the eyes, remove pupil reflections, enlarge the eyes and ever change the color of the eyes and more.
* Tweak the shape of the lips and their color.
* Define the hair area and then smooth it, redden it, darken or lighten it, and more.
This is a very in-depth program that I really enjoy using. I combine it with Photo Shop and get the final image that I am looking for. It must be said that you can go over board and over-correct the image. This is an excellent program that can be used to make the subject look more like we see them when we are face to face. I have upgraded to the higher end program so that I can edit RAW images. This is an excellent program if you use it correctly.
