The Harry Potter franchise has been around since 1997 when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released. In the United Kingdom, home of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, the first book is known as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

There are seven books in the main series in total. These were released over a 10-year period, ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007. Since then other media set in the wizarding world has been produced including the play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the spin-off book and movie Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Both of which were penned by J.K. Rowling herself. There is also a series of video games.

Harry Potter video games have been around since not long after the book series began. The first one was based on the debut novel and was released in 2001. At this point, the range of games has expanded far beyond the number of books.

Half of them are based on the individual books in the franchise, while the other half are mostly spin-offs, largely focusing on other aspects of the series such as Quidditch or spells. Finally, there are two LEGO games which focus on books 1-4 and 5-7.

So, when the choice is so great how are you supposed to know what the best games to play are? Well wonder no more for here is a list of the eight greatest Harry Potter games and the eight which are best banished into the Forbidden Forest.

16 Best: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4

This 2010 multi-platform action-adventure game includes two great franchises, Harry Potter and Lego.

The game’s narrative covers the first 4 books in the series, from The Sorcerer’s Stone up to and including The Goblet of Fire. It also features Lego figures that are based on the novel’s characters. As with all Lego video games, Lego Harry Potter focuses on collecting, exploring and puzzle solving.

The nature of the game fits the storyline of the novels seamlessly.

You can cast spells, make potions and help fellow Hogwarts students out of sticky situations. Everything about this game flows so well. The detail is amazing, and there are some nice little touches, such as using Diagon Alley as a hub for gameplay.

Overall, a perfect combination.

15 Worst: Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery

The potential of this game is huge but sadly the reality has been a let down for many.

The storyline involves trying to solve a mystery involving your characters older brother and some cursed vaults, which takes place several years before the books begin. Although you may not see Harry and friends there are some familiar faces around, including the professors.

The main let down of this game is the energy system, which is very restrictive. Pay to play is expected on mobile games but the price to refill energy is incredibly high, especially compared to how fast it is spent.

This one belongs in the cupboard with the devil’s snare; where you’ll have to wait hours for your energy to refill before you can free it.

14 Best: Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7

The 2011 Sequel to Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 is just as detailed and well thought out as its predecessor.

This action-adventure game follows the same theme as before and covers the final 3 books, from The Order of the Phoenix up to The Deathly Hallows.

Despite being almost identical in style and gameplay this Lego game is no less exciting or entertaining than the first. It simply picks up the storyline and follows it to its glorious conclusion.

All the same exciting storylines, engaging gameplay and cool Lego characters are present and correct. This is one sequel that was worth the wait. Definitely a keeper.

13 Worst: Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone

This first Harry Potter game actually has several forms. Both the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance versions play differently to the Windows/Mac and PlayStation ones.

The later are third-person action adventure games with some combat and puzzle elements, although the PlayStation version features different story events and gameplay. The GBC game is an RPG, while the GBA version is a top-down puzzle game.

Overall this game is very much try hard and fail harder.

The Game Boy Color version fared best in reviews, but none of them set the world on fire, with many complaining about the experience being somewhat lacking. This is one retro game that doesn’t need a comeback.

12 Best: Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets

This is one sequel which really improved upon its predecessor. Although The Sorcerer’s Stone was panned this immediate follow up fared much better.

Once again this is an action-adventure game which follows the storyline of the book and movie of the same name. However, the execution is much improved. The storyline flows nicely and the extra classes you take fit naturally into the gameplay.

You will find the graphics dated since this was released in the era of the GameCube and the PlayStation, but it is still very playable and well worth checking out.

11 Worst: Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

When you look at it objectively this game sounds like it should be leading the pack for gameplay. It had direct involvement from both fans and J.K. Rowling herself.

The game is centered around the novel of the same name and features a sandbox style Hogwarts castle for players to explore. It also contains mini-games including Wizard Chess, Gobstones and Exploding Snap. All of these wizarding games were created in the novels and the game's designers got the rules they created approved by the author herself. Sounds perfect, right?

Sadly, the reality didn’t translate so well, and this game was heavily criticized for repetitive or confusing gameplay and bad execution of the storyline. This game has Voldemort’s dark mark all over it.

10 Best: Book Of Spells

Also known as Wonderbook: Book of Spells, this augmented reality game for the PlayStation 3 uses the PlayStation Move and PlayStation Eye controllers to put you in the place of a Hogwarts student, learning spells.

It uses the technology of the controllers to enable you to cast spells using the move controller and have the results appear on screen.

The game is based on the fictional book by Miranda Goshawk from the Harry Potter novels.

You can choose your Hogwarts house or connect up your Pottermore account to ensure the game reflects your personal style.

This incredibly innovative game was described as “the closest a Muggle can come to a real spellbook” by J.K. Rowling and she’s right. It’s spellbinding.

9 Worst: Harry Potter For Kinect

The Harry Potter for Kinect game features content based on the entire series. It uses the Kinect itself to create an experience where you can use gestures and speech to cast spells and progress through the game.

Your character is yourself and you progress through a series of storylines, including being sorted and selecting your wand.

The main reason this game failed is due to its short length and choppy gameplay. Each story is very brief, and many criticized how quickly the action jumps around. As the interaction is very physical it can also be tiring to play. This quirky Kinect offering is best saved for the smaller muggles in your family, or those with high energy and a low attention span. A definite disconnect.

8 Best: Book Of Potions

This second installment of Harry Potter based augmented reality comes in the form of potion making. Like its predecessor, Book of Spells, it uses the PlayStation Move and PlayStation Eye controllers to create an immersive experience for PlayStation 3 users.

Based on the fictional book by Zygmunt Budge, Book of Potions requires you to brew a range of potions for a Wizarding Schools Potions Championship. You will find out more about each one before you collect ingredients and brew your potions.

The PlayStation Move controller functions as a wand as well as knife and spoon, allowing you to create a range of potions.

As you may expect this experience is every bit as gratifying as the last. If you’ve ever wanted to sit in a potions classroom this game is for you. Don’t forget your cauldron!

7 Worst: Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

Although this follow-up to The Order Of The Phoenix improves upon its predecessor, many found it still didn’t quite hit the spot.

The game itself is based upon the movie of the same name and continues in the third-person action-adventure genre. It involves exploring Hogwarts, casting spells, attending classes and following story-based missions.

The castle grounds are virtually identical to the previous game, bringing a huge sense of repetition. Although some areas are new, and others are now inaccessible it often feels more like a make-over than a new game. It’s for this reason that I’m sending this one to Azkaban.

6 Best: Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

As with the previous games, this one has different versions for various platforms. These include a role-playing version for the Game Boy Advance and an action-adventure platformer for the consoles. The PC version is also an action-adventure game but has a different storyline.

Each version of the game was mostly well received. Although the game is quite short, it flows well and is easy to play. If you are an older gamer you may find this installment to short and too easy, but it is still entertaining.

Overall the game does justice to its material and is enjoyable and fun to play. I’ll save this one a seat on the Hogwarts Express.

5 Worst: Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1

The Deathly Hallows Part 1 is based on the movie of the same name and was released to coincide with its release. This game differs from the previous movie-based games as it brings Harry into the world of third-person shooters.

Splitting the Deathly Hallows was always going to leave the game feeling like it had no proper ending but sadly this game is even worse than that. It seems that all the effort was spent in trying to refresh the game series and bring it up to date but the gameplay and story suffer for it.

Although it involves some nice features, such as stealth missions and a better combat system, overall this game is sadly just dull. This third-person shooter is cursed with bad reviews.

advertising

4 Best: Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire

As with so many of the games which follow the books and movies, this is an action-adventure game. Unlike its predecessors, there is only one version which is the same across all platforms.

The focus of this game is much more action-based, rather than puzzle based, bringing a slightly fresh dynamic to the series. Although you cannot roam freely around the castle anymore this doesn’t harm the game, which closely resembles the storyline of the book.

This was also the first game to introduce multiplayer.

This new feature allows you to combine forces with your friends to make even more powerful spells.

Although some reviews were mixed I feel this one has earned its place at the Hogwarts Feast.

3 Worst: Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2

After the critical panning of The Deathly Hallows Part 1 the game's developers changed things up to try and address the issues. This involved removing some side missions and changing some of the control systems. They also introduced an “Apparate” system to allow players to teleport in and out of battles.

Despite these changes to the gameplay, they did nothing to address the storyline complaints. This meant that the reception was very similar to the previous game, although some positively acknowledged the gameplay changes.

2 Best: Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup

This game is harder to place than the others as it’s very different in terms of content. Of course, it's a sports action game that centers around Quidditch — the fictional sport from the Harry Potter series.

You can play in the Hogwarts Inter-house Quidditch cup on any of the four house teams – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. Alternatively, you can compete in the World Cup. If you prefer a quicker game, you can take part in one-off exhibition matches.

Some critics say the controls are sluggish, but overall, this is far from the worst. It's definitely worth a try, just for the experience of winning a Quidditch match. Go Hufflepuff!

1 Worst (But For The Right Reason): Hogwarts Wizards Unite

Although it may seem harsh to place this on the worst list, it earns its place because everyone wants it — and we're still stuck waiting!

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is set to be an augmented reality mobile game, from Niantic, the creators of Pokémon Go. Information is still limited at this time.

Harry Potter 4 Game Download

However, it appears then you will be able to explore real-world areas and discover artifacts, cast spells, and find fantastic beasts.

It is expected that the game will function in a similar way to Pokémon Go and it is said to also feature some familiar Hogwarts characters.

The game is set to release later this year, I can’t wait!
